CONVEGNO “SLUDGE MANAGEMENT IN CIRCULAR ECONOMY”
SMICE 2018 – Sludge Management in Circular Economy
Rome, 23 – 25 May, 2018
The IWA Specialist Conference on Sludge Management in Circular Economy “SMICE 2018” will be taking place in Rome from the 23rd to the 25th May 2018. SMICE 2018, organized by Water Research Institute of CNR, aims to highlight the coming challenges for scientists and technicians who are pushed to find out new solutions with the common perspective that sludge might be a suitable material for recycling and valorisation into higher-value products.
Conference sessions will be held, the 24 and 25th May, at the Historic Hotel Massimo D’Azeglio, Via Cavour 18, Rome. The Hotel is located in the heart of Rome, behind the Termini Station, close to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Coliseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Roman Forum and the Opera Theatre. The water industry is now facing a new age, due to climate change at global level, with consequences on the availability and quality of this resource. This will be reflected on the WWTPs and expected more stringent standards for their upgrading to produce effluents to be reused, reducing contemporarily the sludge-related impacts on air, soil and underground water. Recovery opportunities for phosphorus, bioplastic, bio-methane and other unexpected useful products from sludge line will be the focus of this conference with attention also to the other conventional problems due to the presence of organic micropollutants and pathogens.
On the other hand, the European Union is about to approve a package of six new directives specifically addressed to Circular Economy which will have certainly a great impact on sludge processing and management.
This conference will be therefore the dedicated platform where the best experiences and attitudes of different continents and countries will be presented and discussed to have a look into the future.
On behalf of the Organizers
Giuseppe Mininni
Chair of the Conference
PROPOSED THEMES:
– Effective management options to reduce adverse environmental effects

Rome is a very ancient city and warmly welcomes all the delegates showing its extraordinary heritage, also in water distribution and collection. Co-organizers ACEA S.p.A., the public company in Rome responsible for water management, will arrange interesting and impressive technical visits. Delegates will have the opportunity to see attractive facilities generally not available to tourists.
